BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 18. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and recent developments in the Middle East, according to the UAE’s state-run WAM news agency.
During the call, the two leaders discussed cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the United States and explored ways to further strengthen relations between the two countries in support of their mutual interests.
According to WAM, Sheikh Mohamed and Trump also reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East and exchanged views on the current regional situation.
The Emirati news agency did not provide further details about the specific regional issues discussed during the conversation.
The call took place amid heightened tensions in the region, particularly surrounding Iran and the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
It also came a day after Trump threatened military action against Oman, a neighbouring country of the UAE, over Muscat’s efforts to broker an arrangement with Tehran concerning the management of the Strait of Hormuz.
Oman has played a significant diplomatic role in regional disputes and has frequently served as an intermediary between Iran, the United States and other parties.
The conversation between the UAE and US presidents underscores ongoing high-level consultations between Abu Dhabi and Washington as regional tensions continue.
