BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 5. More than 821,000 people displaced by the conflict in Lebanon have begun returning to their homes during a relative lull in hostilities, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The UN said that 821,077 people had returned to their areas of origin as of July 30. However, more than 360,000 people remain displaced, including around 26,000 staying in government-run shelters.
The update comes as Lebanese and Israeli delegations continue a new round of U.S.-mediated negotiations in Rome, aimed at advancing efforts to end the fighting. The talks are scheduled to continue through Thursday.
The latest conflict escalated after Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on Israel in support of Iran, followed by extensive Israeli air strikes and a ground operation in Lebanon.
According to Lebanese authorities, the fighting has killed more than 4,300 people and displaced hundreds of thousands. Those casualty figures have not been independently verified.
