BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 21. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has praised a US-brokered framework agreement with Israel, describing it as a historic step aimed at ending the state of hostility between the two countries.
Speaking during a press conference with US President Donald Trump, Aoun thanked Trump and his administration for what he called a significant achievement and expressed hope that the agreement would lead to lasting peace and stability.
“I would like to thank President Trump and his team for the historic achievement we did together — the signing of the framework agreement with the ultimate objective of ending the state of hostility between Lebanon and Israel forever,” Aoun said, according to a statement shared by Al Jazeera correspondent Zeina Khodr.
Aoun told Trump that the agreement could become part of his legacy, adding that Lebanon and the wider region had reached a moment when stability and security were urgently needed.
Earlier, Lebanese army forces began deploying in the southern town of Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh after Israeli forces withdrew from the area, in accordance with the US-backed agreement.
