Ships begin crossing Hormuz under IMO-backed evacuation scheme

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 24. Vessels have started transiting the Strait of Hormuz under a newly launched evacuation and transit scheme supported by the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO), according to Reuters.

TurkicWorld reports that an IMO spokesperson said ships are now using the coordinated corridor, though no official figure was provided on total crossings under the plan. However, ship-tracking data cited by Reuters indicates that at least two dry bulk carriers and one cargo vessel passed through the strait within a 12-hour period.

The initiative follows earlier reports that Oman is working with the IMO to establish a temporary transit corridor aimed at ensuring safer navigation through the strategically important waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy route, and recent security disruptions have prompted international efforts to stabilise maritime traffic in the region.
