Israel’s attacks on Lebanon highlight split with US over Iran deal

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 20. Israel’s escalating military operations in Lebanon are exposing a growing divergence between Israeli and US interests regarding the Iran agreement, according to defence analyst Patrick Bury.

TurkicWorld reports that Bury said that while Israel and the US were largely aligned at the outset of the conflict, differences have emerged as political and strategic interests diverge. He noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces domestic pressure but retains support for continuing operations against Hezbollah and Iranian influence, whereas US calculations under Donald Trump prioritize keeping the US-Iran deal intact.

Bury warned that the deal’s survival serves the interests of both Iran and the US, but not necessarily Israel, potentially creating tension in the trilateral relationship.

“The concern is that Israel may find itself at odds with the strategic objective of maintaining the US-Iran agreement, even as regional military actions continue,” he said.

The analysis underscores the complexities facing Washington and Tel Aviv as they navigate security, diplomatic, and domestic pressures in the Middle East.
