BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 28. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow is urging Washington and Tehran to maintain negotiations and avoid a return to direct military confrontation.
TurkicWorld reports that, according to comments carried by Reuters, Zakharova emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagement at a time of heightened regional tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
The Russian official also reiterated Moscow’s readiness to assist in the removal of enriched uranium from Iran as part of broader diplomatic efforts surrounding Tehran’s nuclear programme.
At the same time, Zakharova stressed that Russia “is not imposing its initiative”, signaling that any potential arrangement would depend on agreements reached between the involved parties.
Russia has repeatedly positioned itself as a possible mediator in disputes related to Iran’s nuclear activities and regional security issues. Moscow maintains diplomatic and strategic relations with Tehran while also seeking to preserve communication channels with Washington.
The latest remarks come amid increased concerns over military escalation in the Gulf region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing tensions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme.
International observers warn that a breakdown in diplomacy between Washington and Tehran could further destabilise the Middle East and impact global energy markets and security dynamics.
