BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 10. Since the announcement of the ceasefire early on Wednesday in Asia, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has fielded a series of phone calls from world leaders — congratulating Islamabad, and expressing support for its diplomatic efforts TurkicWorld reports via aljazeera.
The US and Iran are expected to hold negotiations in Islamabad on Saturday to try to use the two-week ceasefire to finalise a longer term peace plan.
The calls — with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, French President Emmanuel Macron, King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam of Lebanon, Chancellor Christian Stocker of Austria, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz — underscore the central role Pakistan has played in getting the US and Iran to the negotiating table.
But they represent more than gratitude for Pakistan — they also strengthen Islamabad’s hands as it tries to make sure that the US and Iran to veer away from their willingness to talk, in the days ahead.
