TotalEnergies and SSE have announced the formation of a joint venture, Source, aimed at establishing a significant presence in the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure market across the UK and Ireland, TurkicWorld reports.
This collaboration will see the deployment of up to 3,000 high-power charge points over the next five years, catering to the increasing demand for fast and reliable EV charging from both individual drivers and fleet operators.
Source plans to roll out 300 EV hubs, each equipped with high-power charge points of 150 kW and above, targeting a 20% market share. These hubs will be strategically located in and around urban areas, ensuring accessibility for EV users. Importantly, the charging hubs will be powered by renewable energy sources supplied by SSE and TotalEnergies. Construction has already begun on several hubs, with numerous additional sites currently in the planning stages.
In the UK, Source aims to address the growing need for ultra-fast charging infrastructure, a critical component in meeting the recent legislative mandate for zero vehicle emissions for all new cars and vans. This initiative is expected to significantly support the decarbonisation of the transport sector by enhancing the power supply infrastructure for EV and fleet owners.
Similarly, in Ireland, Source's ambitious plans will contribute to the government's goal of having nearly one million electric vehicles on the road by 2030. By expanding the EV charging network, Source aims to bolster consumer confidence in electric vehicles, thereby accelerating the transition to cleaner transport solutions.
