With the registration published on March 13, 2023 in the EU Official Journal, "Antakya Künefesi" is now protected in the EU against any misuse, imitation and association.
The name and logo of "Antakya Künefesi" can be used by producers provided that they comply with the local production techniques specified in the registration certificate/product specifications and are produced within the borders of Türkiye's Hatay province with all its districts, reports TurkicWorld.
The EU registration of "Antakya Künefesi" from Hatay, a gastronomy city, increases the recognition and competitiveness of the product, strengthens domestic demand and export potential, and contributes to the economy and employment of the region where it is produced.
The registration of "Antakya Künefe" in the EU will also contribute to the protection of the historical and cultural heritage of Hatay, which is still recovering from the earthquake disaster.
With the registration of "Antakya Künefesi", the number of products with a geographical indication in the EU has reached 9 (Antep Baklava, Aydın Fig, Aydın Chestnut, Bayramiç White, Giresun Tombul Hazelnut, Malatya Apricot, Milas Olive Oil and Taşköprü Garlic).
Currently, there are 45 products for which applications for geographical indications have been made to the EU and are under review by the European Commission.
