BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 11. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has condemned the latest Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s internationally recognised government, describing them as a “dangerous escalation” amid already heightened regional tensions.
Prévot said the Houthis were escalating the conflict with what he described as continued support from Iran, arguing that Tehran could not simultaneously call for de-escalation while supporting forces that attack neighbouring countries and threaten a major international shipping route.
He warned that the Bab al-Mandeb Strait should not be used as a bargaining tool, stressing that disruptions to the strategic waterway could affect global supply chains.
According to Prévot, prolonged disruption could contribute to higher prices and shortages of food, fuel and other essential goods, with vulnerable populations likely to suffer the greatest impact.
The Belgian foreign minister called for an immediate end to the escalation and urged all sides to protect freedom of navigation.
He also called on Iran to use its influence to promote de-escalation rather than confrontation, stressing that diplomatic efforts should prevail before the conflict opens another dangerous front.
