BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 1. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that a return by the United States to a policy of pressure and threats could undermine diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the economically damaging conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian said repeated US violations of commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding had demonstrated the lack of effective guarantees for agreements.
“The repeated violation by the United States of its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding showed … the absence of effective enforcement guarantees and a return to a policy of pressure and threats could derail the path of diplomacy,” Pezeshkian said.
The Iranian president argued that continued pressure could complicate efforts to reach a diplomatic solution.
His comments came after US President Donald Trump threatened to “hit them hard” following a series of reciprocal attacks between Washington and Tehran.
The latest escalation included an Iranian missile barrage targeting US bases in Jordan, according to reports.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have increased amid disputes over sanctions, security arrangements and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
