BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 28. Pakistan and Kuwait have signed a new defence agreement that significantly expands the military cooperation framework established between the two countries in 2023.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and his Kuwaiti counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, signed the “Protocol Agreement-2026” in Rawalpindi on Thursday.
According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence, the agreement will strengthen cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries in several key areas.
Under the deal, Pakistan’s armed forces will provide training assistance to Kuwait’s military and contribute to capacity building within the country’s defence forces.
Pakistan will also assist Kuwait with border management and other areas of military cooperation agreed by the two sides.
The new protocol builds on a defence cooperation agreement originally signed by Pakistan and Kuwait in June 2023.
Although the underlying agreement was concluded three years ago, Kuwait formally ratified it only last month, paving the way for expanded practical cooperation.
The agreement comes as Gulf states deepen defence and security ties with Pakistan, which has longstanding military relationships with several countries in the region.
However, while the new arrangements clarify what Pakistan will provide to Kuwait in areas such as training and capacity building, the immediate benefits Islamabad will receive under the expanded partnership remain less clear from the information announced so far.
