Italy signals diplomatic support for Israel–Lebanon agreement and possible post-UNIFIL mission

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 27. Italy has expressed readiness to support the newly signed Israel–Lebanon agreement through diplomatic channels and has indicated it could contribute to a future international mission following the end of the UN peacekeeping mandate in Lebanon, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

TurkicWorld reports that speaking at a press conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where he attended an international forum and the MED-9 summit, Tajani described the agreement as “certainly a step forward,” while noting that stability in the region will take time to achieve.

He said that the signing of the agreement itself was an important milestone, adding that Italy is prepared to “provide diplomatic support” and potentially take part in an international mission alongside its armed forces after the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate concludes.

Tajani also said Italy, together with France, could play a significant role in Lebanon’s reconstruction efforts, particularly in strengthening state institutions and supporting sovereignty.

He added that any future post-UNIFIL mission would need to be based on a multilateral framework, and suggested that participation from Arab and Gulf countries should not be excluded.
