Bonaire thanks Baku Initiative Group for support in decolonization

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 22. I am grateful to the Baku Initiative Group for supporting the people of Bonaire, Vice President of the Bonaire Human Rights Organization James Finies said during the international conference in Baku, Trend reports.

"Today, you will hear the voices of those who have been silenced and cannot speak for themselves. We do not live in a post-colonial world or a post-colonial Caribbean," he stated.

He added that Bonaire's representatives have committed to advocating for human rights for all.

"This is our reality, our daily struggle. We are confronting democratic changes, population shifts, and the significant impact of Dutch immigration on our demographics and governance," he said.

Baku is hosting an international conference focused on Bonaire, an island that is under Dutch colonial rule. The event is organized by the Baku Initiative Group and the Movement for Human Rights and Change on Bonaire Island.

The "Path to Bonaire's Self-Determination at the UN General Assembly through Baku Initiative Group" conference has brought together representatives from Bonaire, who are fighting against colonialism, along with officials and delegates from Belize, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, St. Lucia, the UK, Mexico, the Netherlands, the UN, and other international and regional organizations. Human rights activists, NGO leaders, experts, and researchers in the field of decolonization will also participate in the conference.
