BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 5. Meta Platforms has apologised to the Indian government after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's social media post was briefly restricted in July due to what the company described as an operational error.
Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan said he personally apologised to India's Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.
"I apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for the error restricting PM Modi's post," Kaplan said in a statement.
Last month, India's information technology ministry summoned Meta executives after the post was temporarily restricted on Facebook. Meta later said the action resulted from an operational error and was not intentional.
The apology comes amid broader tensions between Meta and the Indian government over online content related to Prime Minister Modi.
Separately, Indian media reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also apologised to government officials over issues including child sexual abuse material, deepfake content, and other operational shortcomings on the company's platforms.
According to the BBC, the Indian government in July ordered Meta to remove advertisements and content promoting child sexual abuse material on Instagram. Meta has said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward such content and continues to strengthen its detection systems.
