The participation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku has been completed.

The event was attended by about 50 thousand people from around the world, including leaders of more than 100 countries.

The main topics of COP29, which will last until Nov.22, were measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, climate finance, technological innovations in the energy sector, education of the younger generation and support for youth initiatives aimed at combating climate change.

On the second day of his working visit, Nov. 12, the Kyrgyz leader delivered a national statement at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, calling for coordinated and financially supported measures to implement the Paris Agreement.

He proposed a mechanism to swap foreign debt for sustainable development projects and initiated the creation of the Climate Trust Fund.

The president emphasized the importance of renewable energy, highlighting hydroelectric and solar power plant projects, and focused on melting glaciers and threats to water resources. He called on international partners to support sustainable development initiatives in mountain regions.

On the margins of the World Leaders Summit on Climate Action, Sadyr Zhaparov participated in a high-level roundtable on climate finance organized by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

In his speech, the Kyrgyz leader emphasized that global climate change poses a serious threat to the sustainable development of all countries, and climate finance issues are of particular importance.

Along with this, on Nov. 13, Sadyr Zhaparov also participated and spoke at the High-Level Dialogue on Mountains and Climate Change, organized by Kyrgyzstan together with Azerbaijan and Mongolia.

In his speech, the president called on the international community to intensify support to mountain countries, which are most vulnerable to climate change, despite their minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.

At the round table “Mountains in Danger: Addressing Loss and Damage in the Himalayas” organized by Nepal, the president of Kyrgyzstan emphasized that glaciers that supply water to millions of people in Central Asia are rapidly disappearing. This is not only a problem for Kyrgyzstan - it is a regional and global issue.

That is why Kyrgyzstan has taken the responsibility to promote the Mountain Agenda at the UN and advocates for the recognition of the unique problems of the world's mountain regions.

As part of his participation in the COP29, Zhaparov visited the national pavilion under the general theme “Kyrgyzstan: Sustainable Mountain Development”.

The pavilion, which is open to the public until Nov. 21, holds daily presentations with the participation of ministries and agencies of the country on topical issues of the climate agenda, energy, trade and economic, tourism and investment potential of Kyrgyzstan, as well as cultural events, exhibitions of national mountain products (honey, dried fruits, national drinks, etc.) and tastings.

Having completed his participation in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, President Sadyr Zhaparov returned to Bishkek on Nov.13.
