Kyrgyzstan hosts E-Commerce Expo 2024 to drive digital transformation in Central Asia

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce of the Kyrgyz Republic hosted the E-Commerce Expo 2024, a milestone event aimed at accelerating digital transformation across Central Asia. The event attracted over 600 participants, including business leaders, government officials, entrepreneurs, and representatives from international organizations, marking a key moment in the region’s journey toward a robust digital economy.

The E-Commerce Expo 2024 provided a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange on emerging digital tools and trends. The forum aimed to accelerate intra-regional business connections, promote stakeholder dialogue, and drive the growth of e-commerce, all while enhancing participants' understanding of the digital economy.

“E-commerce in Kyrgyzstan is rapidly evolving, and we are committed to creating the conditions necessary for it to become a vital component of our economy. The recently adopted laws and programs to support e-commerce, along with our collaboration with the private sector and international partners, are unlocking new opportunities for entrepreneurs and enhancing confidence in the e-commerce landscape. The E-COM EXPO 2024 forum serves as a crucial platform for discussing joint initiatives and developing actionable plans for advancing the e-commerce market,” said Nazarbek Malaev, Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce of the Kyrgyz Republic.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) plays a pivotal role in advancing digital development in Kyrgyzstan through various initiatives focused on enhancing digital infrastructure, building capacity, and promoting policies that support digitalization and social cohesion. Through initiatives like the Digital Readiness Assessment and the Joint Digital Health Programme UNDP exemplifies its commitment to equipping individuals and businesses, particularly in rural areas, with the tools necessary for success in an increasingly digital world.

“Digital transformation is a key driver for e-commerce, which, in turn, generates jobs, builds businesses, and supports sustainable economic growth. UNDP is committed to ensuring that Kyrgyzstan’s digital transformation leaves no one behind, with a special focus on youth, women, rural communities, and persons with disabilities. Our work aligns closely with the country’s Conception of Digital Transformation for 2024-2028, promoting a cohesive and prosperous society.”-said Alexandra Solovieva, UNDP Resident Representative.

As part of this broader vision, UNDP is supporting the development of an E-commerce Park in Kyrgyzstan, which will offer a preferential regulatory regime for e-commerce enterprises. This effort is designed to attract investment and stimulate the growth of the business ecosystem. The e-commerce sector is expected to grow from $360 million in 2024 to $595.7 million by 2028, with tax revenues set to more than double by 2025.

Furthermore, by 2025, UNDP’s E-commerce incubation programme aims to train more than 50 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in digital marketing and online sales, reinforcing the private sector’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.

"Kyrgyzstan is uniquely positioned to attract investment, advance entrepreneurship, and establish itself as a competitive player in the global digital economy. It is essential that we leverage this potential effectively,” said Aibek Kurenkeev, President of the E-Commerce Association of the Kyrgyz Republic.

UNDP is also spearheading efforts to equip young entrepreneurs with the skills needed to thrive in the digital marketplace. Initiatives such as Sanarip Aiymdar have empowered over 180 young women with digital skills, leading to employment opportunities for more than half of the participants. Additionally, the Janyration Aimak initiative has supported 76 youth-led startups across key regions, generating 378 jobs and contributing to local economic development.

Overall, the discussions and workshops during the forum addressed the challenges and opportunities within the e-commerce landscape, equipping participants with valuable insights to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy. The event catalyzed meaningful progress in digital development, paving the way for inclusive growth and innovation in Central Asia.

Organized with the support of UNDP and other stakeholders, the forum facilitated knowledge exchange, encouraged collaboration, and established vital business connections among participants. By informing and popularizing digital economy tools, fostering open dialogue, and stimulating e-commerce development, this forum marks a critical step forward in enhancing the digital landscape of Central Asia, paving the way for future growth, innovation and cohesion.
