BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 10. IPresident of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Head of Russia’s Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov visited Baku White City on October 10.
According to the Azerbaijani Presidential Press Service, Baku White City Executive Director Ruslan Sadigov briefed Kadyrov on the facilities and infrastructure created as part of the project.
The area was formerly known as Black City and had been heavily polluted by oil industry waste for more than 150 years. The site once contained numerous oil ponds before an extensive environmental redevelopment project was launched at the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev.
The Baku White City project has transformed the former industrial area into a modern residential and urban development district and is regarded as a major example of contemporary urban planning.
Construction of the project began on December 24, 2011, with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva.
The project was designed around environmentally friendly and sustainable urban development principles, including the concept of a smart city. Baku White City features wide internal streets, landscaped green areas, modern international examples of sculpture and contemporary urban infrastructure.
