BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 11. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the unveiling ceremony of a monument dedicated to renowned architect Ajami Nakhchivani at the Ajami Seyrangah recreation complex in Nakhchivan city on August 11.
One of the authors of the monument, People's Artist Salhab Mammadov, briefed the President and the First Lady about the memorial.
This year marks the 900th anniversary of the birth of Ajami Nakhchivani, one of the most prominent figures of Azerbaijani architecture and the founder of the Nakhchivan architectural school.
President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree last year on commemorating the 900th anniversary of Ajami Nakhchivani’s birth and erecting a monument in his honour.
The monument complex was created to present the rich architectural heritage of the great Azerbaijani architect Ajami Nakhchivani through a modern artistic approach.
The sculpture was created by People's Artists Salhab Mammadov, Ali Ibadullayev, and Chairman of the Nakhchivan Union of Architects Heydar Ahmadov.
The height of the statue is 270 centimetres, the pedestal is 90 centimetres, and the total height of the monument reaches 385 centimetres. The sculpture is made of bronze, while the pedestal is made of granite. Landscaping works were also carried out around the complex, including the creation of green areas.
Ajami Nakhchivani played a significant role in the development of medieval Azerbaijani architecture. The creation of the monument reflects Azerbaijan’s attention to preserving the legacy of its historical figures and promoting their contributions to future generations.
The 850th anniversary of Ajami Nakhchivani’s birth was officially celebrated in Azerbaijan in 1976 on the initiative of National Leader Heydar Aliyev.
The inclusion of Ajami Nakhchivani’s 900th anniversary among the UNESCO anniversary celebrations contributes to the wider international promotion of Azerbaijan’s centuries-old cultural heritage.
