JICA prioritizes transport sector development in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, August 7. Development of the transport sector is among the main priorities of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Kyrgyzstan, a source at JICA told TurkicWorld

"Infrastructure development for industry diversification is one of the pillar directions in JICA’s cooperation with Kyrgyzstan, including the development of the transport sector. The public roads in the country ensure 98 percent passenger and 96 percent freight traffic. Since the early 1990s, the government of Kyrgyzstan has taken active measures to broaden and maintain the international trunk road network of the country to ensure export activities. JICA has been contributing to the development of international trunk roads in several directions," the source said.

The agency's efforts in Kyrgyzstan focus on road and bridge reconstruction, maintenance, and road disaster prevention.

"JICA has supported the supply of road equipment (asphalt plants, stone crushing facilities, dump trucks, road rollers, motor grades, asphalt finishers) to all the regions of Kyrgyzstan," the source added.

JICA is an independent agency founded in 1974 that supports the economic and social development of developing countries on behalf of the Japanese government. In Kyrgyzstan, it focuses on supporting continuous, balanced economic growth to drive the institutionalization of democracy.

Under this policy, JICA aims to diversify industry and create jobs by promoting agricultural exports, industry, and SMEs, as well as developing infrastructure for industry diversification. Additionally, JICA seeks to improve government administration and social services.
