ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 23. Kazakhstan's economic diversification efforts gain momentum with new infrastructure initiatives, said President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev as he addressed the official ceremony for the presentation of state awards on the occasion of Republic Day, TurkicWorld reports.
He highlighted the development of a new energy, transport, and industrial framework as a pivotal step towards a "Just Kazakhstan" concept.
One of the major achievements he pointed to was the completion of a bridge over the Bukhtarma Reservoir, which has long posed logistical challenges for local residents. "Five years ago, I tasked the government with constructing this bridge. For a long time, people had to cross this water barrier only by ferry or, in winter, on ice, which was, of course, extremely inconvenient. Now, this problem has been resolved," Tokayev stated during the official opening of the bridge.
The newly inaugurated bridge is now the longest in Kazakhstan and is expected to transform border areas into transit hubs, creating a shorter transport corridor between China and Russia. Tokayev noted, "This significant project will enhance transport connectivity across several districts in the East Kazakhstan region. Undoubtedly, good roads are the key to the well-being of our people, and I place great importance on this issue."
The president further detailed the ongoing infrastructure improvements, revealing that 12,000 kilometers of highways are currently under construction or renovation. Special attention is being given to upgrading roads in various regions, including addressing neglected routes from the Soviet era. "This year, the Kaztalovka – Zhanibek – Russian Federation border road will be commissioned," he announced.
In addition to road improvements, Tokayev mentioned advancements in air transport. "Soon, new international terminals will open in the airports of Kyzylorda and Shymkent," he added.
He also discussed comprehensive measures aimed at diversifying the economy. "As of August this year, the export of processed industrial products exceeded $17.8 billion, with more than a third of this volume comprising high-value-added goods. Today, 17 breakthrough investment projects are being implemented in the country," the president noted, highlighting the government's commitment to fostering economic growth through infrastructure and industrial diversification.
