ASTANA, Kazakhstan, September 2. A nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan is set for October 6 this year, said President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during his annual address to the people at a joint session of Parliament, rTurkicWorld eports.
"Every major decision for the country must have the support of the people. The same applies to the nuclear power plant referendum. I first raised the possibility last year, so this issue has been on the public agenda for a year now. I believe this has given citizens ample time to make an informed decision. Therefore, I support the government’s proposal. The nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant will take place on October 6 this year, and I will sign the corresponding decree today," he said.
He noted that given the growing global energy deficit, the country urgently needs reliable and environmentally friendly energy sources.
"That’s why I believe we must focus on developing nuclear energy. This type of power generation can significantly meet our economy’s rapidly growing demands. Currently, about 200 nuclear power plants operate in 30 developed and developing countries.
We need to think about the future, taking into account our country’s long-term national interests and specific needs. That’s why I’ve always emphasized the importance of making a well-considered decision on the construction of a nuclear power plant and having a broad public discussion on strategic plans.
The upcoming referendum will be another example of a broad national dialogue and a clear demonstration of the 'listening state' concept in action. Essentially, by taking such steps, we are shaping a new socio-political culture and setting new standards for making key state decisions," the head of state added.
