Kyrgyzstan and Rosatom intend to construct small nuclear power plant

Bishkek, Jan. 21, 2022. / Kabar /. Rosatom State Corporation and the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan signed in Dubai a Memorandum of Cooperation on the construction of small nuclear power plants.

Within the framework of the memorandum signed by Director General of Rosatom State Corporation Alexei Likhachev and Minister of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic Doskul Bekmurzaev, the parties express interest in developing cooperation in the construction of a low-power nuclear power plant based on the RITM-200N reactor plant in Kyrgyzstan, according to the corporation's website.

Also, the Memorandum of Cooperation provides for assistance in the development of the nuclear infrastructure of the Kyrgyz Republic and joint work to improve the skills of scientific and technical personnel in various areas of the peaceful use of atomic energy.

“The implementation of low-power nuclear power plant projects is one of the most important priorities of the Rosatom, which in the future will significantly change the energy balance of many countries of the world and contribute to the development of remote areas with closed energy systems. The construction of such a nuclear power plant in Kyrgyzstan will not only contribute to the energy independence of the country, but also affect the quality of life of the population and the development of the scientific and technical potential of the entire Central Asian region,” said Alexei Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation.

“Decarbonization and the development of environmentally friendly energy sources is a current global trend, from which the Kyrgyz Republic does not want to stand aside. We are confident that further cooperation with Rosatom State Corporation will open up new horizons for the development of the energy, economy and industry of our country,” said Tilek Aitaliev, Deputy Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan.
