BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. Azerbaijan is set to build 28 hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in the Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur regions, TurkicWorld reports.
This initiative is part of the "National Strategy for the Efficient Use of Water Resources," approved by President Ilham Aliyev.
The strategy outlines measures to optimize water and hydropower use in these economic regions by implementing "smart water supply" systems. As part of the plan, 28 HPPs will be constructed, surface water hydroelectric potential will be assessed, and a compact power plant will be developed to support these hydroelectric facilities. The strategy also considers opportunities for health, coastal, and water tourism.
Additionally, the improvements will enhance drinking water supplies, support irrigation needs for agriculture, and enable efficient water use with inter-basin water transfer. This development will provide irrigation water to over 300,000 hectares of land in these regions, boosting agricultural productivity and sustainability.
