Equinor secures EU funding for world's first ammonia-powered supply vessel

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 26. Equinor has secured a contract with Eidesvik Offshore to convert the Viking Energy supply vessel to run on ammonia,TurkicWorld reports.

The vessel, which services Equinor's installations on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), is set to become operational with significantly reduced emissions by 2026.

The conversion will involve the installation of a new engine built by Wärtsilä, reducing emissions from Viking Energy by at least 70 percent. Equinor will play a key role in funding this groundbreaking project, which has also secured a 5 million euro grant from the EU Horizon Europe program.

The comprehensive conversion, including installing the engine, fuel gas supply system, and exhaust after-treatment, is scheduled for completion in 2026. This initiative aligns with the government's upcoming requirements for low-emission solutions from 2025, and zero emissions from new supply vessels starting in 2029.

In addition to this contract, Equinor is actively exploring the market for other supply vessels that run on ammonia.
