Iran says nuclear industry progressing despite sanctions, threats and attacks

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 8. The head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, said the country’s nuclear industry has continued to make progress despite what he described as “sanctions, threats and attacks” against the sector, Iran’s Nour News reported.

Eslami said the organisation had achieved advances in areas including health, agriculture and radiopharmaceuticals.

Addressing allegations that Iran seeks to develop nuclear weapons, Eslami said that alongside the pressure on the country, “lies and accusations” were also being made against Iran. He argued that those making the allegations know they are untrue, while saying Iranian nuclear specialists had continued their work and maintained the country’s progress in advanced scientific fields.

Iran has repeatedly said it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons and maintains that its uranium enrichment programme serves civilian purposes, including electricity generation, medical treatment and scientific research.

Speaking about the AEOI’s work in agriculture and food production, Eslami said the organisation had made extensive efforts to apply radiation technology in these sectors.

“Products and seeds that have passed through this process and have undergone plasma or radiation processing have experienced an increase in yields of at least 30 percent and in some cases up to 100 percent,” he said.

Eslami made the remarks during the opening of Iran’s first academic centre dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer.
