BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 26. US President Donald Trump has rejected a proposal from Iran concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, describing the proposal as “unacceptable” and saying Tehran is facing increasing economic pressure.
Speaking outside the White House before traveling to Tennessee, Trump said Iran was seeking an agreement because the closure of the strategic waterway had affected the country’s revenues.
Trump said Iran had “got themselves into a bind” and described the US military measures as what he called “the greatest blockade in military history”.
He also pointed to the importance of the Strait of Hormuz for global oil transportation, saying that large volumes of oil normally pass through the waterway.
Trump said 29 ships had crossed the strait the previous night, without providing further details about the vessels or their cargoes.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major focus of international attention because of its importance to energy markets and maritime trade.
