BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 25. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on European governments to change what he described as their “destructive and irresponsible” approach towards Iran and regional developments.
According to a statement from Araghchi’s office, he made the remarks during a meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The ministers discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues, the statement said.
Araghchi attributed the prevailing insecurity in the region and the Strait of Hormuz to what he called “military aggression” by the United States and Israel, with the support and complicity of certain European countries.
He said the actions had caused what he described as extensive damage to Iran, the region and the wider world.
Araghchi also said that lasting stability and security in the region depended on ending the Israeli occupation and ensuring what he described as the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination.
The Iranian foreign minister further said that the UK and certain other European states should be held accountable for their role in what he described as the creation and continuation of an “occupying, terrorist regime in West Asia”.
Araghchi called for European governments to reconsider what he termed “destructive and irresponsible” policies towards Iran and developments in the region. He also criticised what he described as interference in the internal affairs of states and the use of human rights issues for political purposes.
