BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 23. Iran has cancelled some regional international flights amid increased pressure from US sanctions on the country’s aviation sector.
Iranian media, citing the Civil Aviation Authority, reported that Iraq and Oman would no longer receive flights from Iran starting Wednesday morning.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced further pressure on Iran’s aviation sector in an interview on Monday. He also warned that countries could face exclusion from the US dollar system if they supplied Iranian airlines with fuel, provided landing services or sold tickets on their behalf.
Majid Akhavan, a spokesman for Iran’s aviation authority, said Iran was working to redirect flights to Iraq through another airport, according to ISNA.
Flights operated by Iranian airlines to neighbouring Azerbaijan have also been suspended with immediate effect, the newspaper Shargh reported, citing Azerbaijan Airlines.
