BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 31. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has rejected a claim by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that a supertanker was struck by two mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said that no vessels had hit mines in the strategic waterway.
“FACT: No ships have hit mines in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said, accusing the IRGC of attempting to intimidate regional commercial shipping through what it described as disinformation.
Earlier, the IRGC claimed that a “violating supertanker” had been brought to a complete stop in the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by two mines.
The Iranian force did not provide further details about the vessel or the circumstances of the reported incident.
The competing claims come amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route through which a significant share of international oil shipments passes.
The latest dispute adds to ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States over maritime security, sanctions and regional military activity.
