BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 27. Iran is not experiencing a shortage of goods despite the US naval blockade, but rising prices remain a major problem, according to the head of the Iranian Chamber of Guilds, Qasem Noudeh Farahani.
Farahani said goods remain available across the country, although consumers are facing higher costs caused partly by logistical difficulties and changes to transportation routes.
“We have no shortage of goods, but there is an issue of high prices,” Farahani said in comments reported by Iran’s official IRNA news agency.
He explained that part of the increase in prices is linked to changes in supply routes. With some previous transportation channels disrupted, more goods are being moved by rail and road.
According to Farahani, these alternatives require more time and are more expensive, adding to transportation and distribution costs inside Iran.
The situation comes as the war and US naval blockade place additional pressure on an Iranian economy already weakened by years of international sanctions.
Washington’s latest sanctions have further intensified economic uncertainty and increased pressure on Iran’s national currency.
Following the announcement of new US sanctions on Monday, the Iranian rial fell to a new record low against the US dollar.
Despite the growing economic pressure, Farahani maintained that the central problem currently facing the domestic market is the rising cost of goods rather than their availability.
