Iraq asks Iran for special consideration on oil exports through Strait of Hormuz

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 19. Iraqi Parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi has asked Iran to grant Iraq special consideration regarding its oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Iraqi News Agency.

Al-Halbousi raised the issue during discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, amid regional developments affecting energy exports and maritime transportation.

The Iraqi parliament speaker said his country has been among those most affected by recent developments in the region.

He urged Tehran to take into account the nature of relations between Iraq and Iran when addressing the issue of oil shipments through the strategically important waterway.

According to al-Halbousi, any arrangements should be made “in a way that preserves Iraq’s economic interests”.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial route for global energy supplies, and developments affecting shipping through the waterway can have significant implications for oil-exporting countries in the region.

Ghalibaf, for his part, said Iran was interested in further expanding cooperation with Iraq, particularly in the trade and economic sectors.

He also stressed Tehran’s willingness to follow up on agreements already signed between the two neighbouring countries.
