BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 14. Iranian forces have intercepted and destroyed an MQ-9 Reaper drone over Hormozgan province, Iranian state television has reported.
According to the report, the drone was intercepted by what the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps described as a “new advanced defence system”. The incident represents another reported confrontation involving US unmanned aircraft amid the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran.
The MQ-9 Reaper is a remotely piloted aircraft widely used by the US military for surveillance, reconnaissance and strike operations. The aircraft has been deployed in military missions across the Middle East for years.
Iranian state media also reported that the United States has lost dozens of MQ-9 drones since the war erupted in February. The latest reported incident comes amid continued military tensions and increased activity involving US and Iranian forces across the region.
The reported destruction of the drone could further intensify tensions between Iran and the United States, particularly as both sides continue military operations and accuse each other of escalating the conflict.
