BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 8. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Iran and Oman are “very close” to reaching an agreement on a new protocol for the Strait of Hormuz, but stressed that an understanding with Muscat alone would not be enough to fully reopen the strategic waterway.
In comments shared on his Telegram channel, Araghchi said the reopening of the strait depends on several additional conditions.
Among them, according to the Iranian foreign minister, is compensation from the United States for what Tehran describes as Washington’s violations of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Araghchi indicated that Iran considers resolving those alleged violations an important condition for restoring normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
His comments come as Tehran and Muscat continue negotiations over a new mechanism governing maritime traffic through the waterway.
