Italian FM urges continued dialogue with Iran on Strait of Hormuz

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 5. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has stressed the importance of continued dialogue with Iran to resolve the crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, following a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

In a post on X, Tajani said Araghchi briefed him on the ongoing negotiations between Iran and Oman aimed at reopening the strategic waterway to commercial shipping.

“I reiterated the importance of continuing the dialogue to swiftly reach a political solution to the crisis, including with the United States, and to avoid further escalations,” Tajani wrote.

The Italian foreign minister also emphasized that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz must be preserved.

“It is essential to ensure full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, without tolls or restrictions, in the interest of regional stability and the global economy.”

According to Tajani, the two ministers also discussed the situation in Lebanon.

He expressed hope that the ongoing Israel-Lebanon negotiations in Rome would produce concrete results to strengthen the ceasefire and pave the way for a broader agreement.
