BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 30. Republicans in the U.S. Senate have blocked a resolution that sought to limit President Donald Trump's authority to continue military action against Iran without congressional approval.
The measure would have required the president to end U.S. hostilities against Iran unless Congress specifically authorized continued military involvement.
The Senate voted 50-49 against advancing the resolution, preventing it from moving forward.
Republican Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul joined Democrats in supporting the measure. Meanwhile, Democratic Senator John Fetterman voted with most Republicans to oppose the resolution.
Supporters argued the measure would reaffirm Congress's constitutional role in authorizing the use of military force, while opponents said it could limit the president's ability to respond rapidly to national security threats.
The vote comes amid continued debate in Washington over the scope of presidential war powers and U.S. military involvement in the conflict with Iran.
