BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 27. Iran has signaled that it is not changing its position on the future management of the Strait of Hormuz, despite reporting progress in ongoing political and technical discussions with Oman.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said an Omani delegation held meetings in Tehran on Friday and Saturday, describing the talks as constructive and noting that progress had been made.
According to Baghaei, the discussions are focused on arrangements for maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important shipping routes.
Iranian officials reiterated that communication with the United States continues indirectly through mediators and stressed that no direct negotiations are taking place between Tehran and Washington.
According to reports, Oman has proposed the creation of a regional consortium to oversee the management and security of the strait, allowing commercial vessels to transit without paying tolls.
Iran, however, continues to oppose that proposal and instead supports a mechanism that would remain under Iranian control and require ships to pay what officials describe as a "service fee" for passage.
Although both sides have spoken positively about the recent discussions, Tehran has given no indication that it intends to alter its long-standing position on governance of the Strait of Hormuz.
