BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 24. The European Union has imposed a new round of sanctions targeting five Iranian judges over alleged human rights violations, along with a prominent cyber figure accused of assisting the Iranian government in suppressing information.
In a statement, the Council of the European Union said the measures also target Nima Salehi, the founder of the Iranian Ashiyane cyber group, which the bloc alleges works closely with Iran's Cyber Police (FATA) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The EU said the cyber group has been involved in activities that support the Iranian authorities' efforts to control information and strengthen domestic repression.
The statement did not disclose the names of the five sanctioned Iranian judges.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said the bloc remains committed to holding accountable those it considers responsible for human rights violations in Iran.
"As Tehran intensifies its domestic crackdown, the EU will continue to hold those responsible to account," Kallas wrote in a post on X.
According to the EU Council, the European Union has now imposed restrictive measures on 269 individuals and 53 entities in connection with Iran.
The latest sanctions form part of the EU's broader policy of responding to alleged human rights abuses and actions viewed as undermining fundamental freedoms in the country.
