BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 21. US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that Iran was able to bypass part of the US defence system during an attack carried out in Jordan, while saying that the US military continues efforts to weaken Iran’s military capabilities.
During a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House, Trump said the US military had degraded Iran’s military capabilities “to a level that nobody thought was possible.”
The US president said Iran gained some advantage during the attack in Jordan. “They managed to get something through in Jordan, and if we had other operators, unfortunately, that would not have happened,” Trump said.
Trump did not clarify what he meant by “other operators” in his statement.
The US military said last week that two American service members were killed and four others were medically evacuated following an Iranian missile and drone attack in Jordan.
The incident occurred amid an ongoing military confrontation between Washington and Tehran. The United States has accused Iran of attacks against US forces in the region, while Tehran says its actions are responses to American strikes.
