BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 21. US President Donald Trump has said that the war involving Iran will not affect the upcoming November congressional elections. He suggested that Iran’s actions regarding the Strait of Hormuz may be aimed at weakening his and the Republican Party’s position ahead of the vote.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Iran could be attempting to influence the political situation in the United States by increasing pressure over the strategic waterway.
The US president stated that threats related to the Strait of Hormuz may be intended to affect election outcomes, but emphasized that such considerations would not influence his decisions.
“I’m just going to do the right thing,” Trump said, adding that he does not view the conflict with Iran through the lens of electoral politics.
Trump also claimed that the American public supports his policies and said he is not concerned about the elections.
The US-Israeli military campaign against Iran remains a controversial issue domestically, while disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and rising prices have increased concerns among Americans.
