Iran United Arab Emirates Repatriation Detention Iranian fishermen Sistan and Baluchestan

Iran says 55 detained fishermen in UAE being repatriated

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 14, Iran’s embassy in Abu Dhabi has announced that 55 Iranian fishermen, who were detained in the United Arab Emirates, are being repatriated to Iran.

According to the embassy, fourteen fishermen have already returned by sea, while the remaining individuals are expected to travel home by air. The fishermen were arrested in March and April after disruptions in navigation systems reportedly led UAE authorities to detain them.

“These 55 fishermen, mainly from the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan and Hormozgan, were arrested by the UAE Coast Guard in March and April due to the specific conditions in the region and disruptions in tracking systems, and spent more than two months in the Sweihan detention centre and prisons in Ras al-Khaimah and Sharjah,” the embassy said in a statement.

The repatriation marks the end of a prolonged detention period and follows diplomatic coordination between Iran and the UAE.
