China urges US and Iran to maintain ceasefire and respect MoU commitments

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 10, China has called on the United States and Iran to maintain the cessation of hostilities and uphold commitments made under their memorandum of understanding (MoU) during an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

China’s Deputy UN Envoy Sun Lei said preserving the ceasefire was essential and urged both sides to respect territorial integrity and sovereignty as agreed in the framework.

“It is vital to maintain the cessation of hostilities,” Sun Lei said, adding that sanctions against Iran should be lifted.

He also said Iran should continue to honour its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons while maintaining its right to pursue civilian nuclear energy.

Sun Lei stressed China’s “impartial and consistent stance” on resolving international disputes and said Beijing was committed to playing a constructive role in achieving a peaceful solution.
