NATO calls on Iran to respect freedom of navigation in Strait of Hormuz

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 8, NATO leaders have called on Iran to respect freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the alliance’s final statement issued at the summit in Ankara.

The statement said NATO members agreed to further develop the alliance’s military capabilities, including air and missile defence systems.

The leaders also pledged to increase defence spending and expand the military-industrial capacity of member states.

In the final statement, NATO reiterated that Iran must not be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon.

The Ankara summit took place amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, with US President Donald Trump using the sidelines of the meeting to declare that the Iran ceasefire memorandum of understanding was “over”.
