South Korea's Lee calls for expanded defence cooperation with NATO

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 7, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for expanding defence cooperation with NATO, proposing broader collaboration in arms research, development, and weapons production.

Speaking at the NATO Defence Industry Forum in Ankara, Lee said South Korea aims to strengthen cooperation with NATO allies in cutting-edge technologies and the joint development of advanced weapons systems.

He proposed upgrading the current framework of cooperation to a “South Korea-NATO Defence Industry Partnership 2.0,” which would go beyond arms trade to include joint research, production, and operation of defence systems.

Lee said combining South Korea's proven technologies and stable production capabilities with NATO's decades of expertise would significantly strengthen the defence capabilities of both sides.

He also stressed that South Korea remains a reliable and trusted defence partner for NATO member states.
