BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 29. Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have emerged as a major point of contention in Iran-US peace talks, analysts warn, potentially complicating ongoing diplomatic efforts.
TurkicWorld reports that Abbas Aslani of the Center for Middle East Strategic Studies said that in recent days both sides have been demonstrating leverage over the strategic waterway, which Iran can use to influence negotiations with the United States.
“This has been clouding the atmosphere of the talks,” Aslani told Al Jazeera, noting that Iran’s senior negotiator confirmed no technical meetings are expected this week.
He added that recent developments suggest the US, possibly dissatisfied with the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Strait of Hormuz, may be exploring alternative approaches during the implementation phase of the agreement.
