BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 17. US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, accusing former President Barack Obama of effectively “bribing” Tehran to secure the deal.
TurkicWorld reports that speaking to reporters in France during the G7 summit, Trump referred to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and repeated longstanding claims that the Obama administration provided large cash payments to Iran.
“The JCPOA done by Obama – he handed them $1.7bn in cash … into a Boeing 757 and flew it into Iran,” Trump said, alleging that the funds were part of an attempt to secure Iranian acceptance of the agreement.
He further claimed that Iran reacted dismissively to the arrangement, saying: “He tried to bribe his way out. I didn’t try to do that,” and added that Iranian officials allegedly “laughed at Obama,” using highly critical language.
The comments revive long-running political disputes in the United States over the JCPOA, which was originally designed to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, and which has remained a point of contention across successive US administrations.
