SAMARKAND, Uzbekistan, September 25. Uzbekistan has launched several programs on the development of medium-sized cities jointly with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the president of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev said at the opening ceremony of the annual meeting of the Governing Council of the AIIB in Samarkand,TurkicWorld reports.
"In cooperation with AIIB, projects worth $200 million have been launched to develop medium-sized cities and $130 million to improve infrastructure in rural areas. I am confident of further expansion of such infrastructure projects with the bank and other partners," he said.
Furthermore, the head of state said private operators will take over power, water, and gas distribution networks in five years. A tender to administer Samarkand Oblast's energy networks has attracted over 50 significant foreign enterprises.
"More than 100,000 houses are being built annually in the country. In major cities such as Tashkent, Samarkand, Namangan and Andijan, as well as in regional centers, major projects are being implemented to create New Uzbekistan towns," President Mirziyoyev added.
