2023 Presidential elections in Uzbekistan

On April 30th of this year, the Republic of Uzbekistan conducted a constitutional referendum. The referendum resulted in over 90% of the population voting "Yes" in favor of the proposed constitutional changes. Subsequently, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev utilized the authority granted to him in Article 128 of the updated constitution to enact an important decision. This decision stipulated that the presidential election would take place in the country before the conclusion of President Mirziyoyev's current term.

The decision regarding the presidential election in Uzbekistan was officially signed on May 8th, and the election campaign commenced on May 10th. It was officially announced that the election would be held on July 9th, 2023. Today, there are 5 political parties in the Republic of Uzbekistan:

1. UzKDP / People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan

2. UZLiDeP / Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan

3. UzMTDP / National Democratic Party of Uzbekistan

4. SDP Adolat / Social Democratic Party of Uzbekistan Adolat

5. Eco-movement / Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan

In the upcoming presidential elections, several candidates have been recommended by their respective parties. These include Abdushukur Hamzayev from the Eco-movement party, Ulugbek Inoyatov from the UzKDP party, Robakhon Mahmudova from the SDP Adolat party, and Shavkat Mirziyoyev from the UzLiDeP party. However, it should be noted that the UzMTDP party has announced its decision not to participate in the presidential elections.

Each candidate has their own programs for the presidency. Let's take a look at their programs:

The candidate from the SDP Adolat Party, Robakhon Mahmudova, has outlined six key goals for the next five years: 1. The ultimate goal is to establish a legal and social state; 2. Ensuring a robust social policy that guarantees the well-being of the people; 3. Building a just society that serves, represents, and prioritizes the interests of the people; 4. Promoting a smart economy to facilitate rapid development in the country; 5. Entrusting the future of the nation to the patriotic youth; 6. Pursuing a peaceful and progressive foreign policy that prioritizes national interests.

Also Shavkat Mirziyoyev, representing the UZLiDeP party, has identified five main goals in his presidential program: 1. The first goal is focused on education, creating favorable conditions for individuals to realize their potential; 2. Ensuring a stable economic life that includes provisions for water resources; 3. Emphasizing the conservation of water resources and environmental protection; 4. Establishing the rule of law and implementing public administration in the service of the people; 5. Further enhancing the military potential of the Armed Forces.

Ulugbek Inoyat, the candidate of the UzMTDP party, also included the following goals in his program:

1. A strong social policy is the foundation of a social state, a stable society and a prosperous life. 2. Affordable housing and high-quality communal services are an important factor in improving people's quality of life. 3. Guaranteed and high-quality medical care is a guarantee of human health. 4. Youth education is the guarantee of the nation's future and country's competitiveness. 5. Socially oriented market economy is the basis of sustainable development and social well-being. 6. Social acceptability of goods and services creates an environment of equality and equal opportunities. 7. Democratic governance based on social equality and people's power. 8. Judicial reforms are a pledge to ensure the rule of law, equality and human rights. 9. Openness and the priority of national interests are the foundation of a constructive foreign policy.

Abdushukur Hamzayev, a member of the Ekoharakat political party, has put forward his pre-election program, highlighting key areas for development. His program focuses on the following aspects: 1. Promoting the development of "green" technologies to foster environmental sustainability; 2. Ensuring energy security within the country; 3. Enhancing the effectiveness of reforms in state and community administration, including the judicial system, healthcare, education, science, and cultural and educational fields; 4. Prioritizing national development and progress; 5. Strengthening foreign policy and fostering international cooperation. By addressing these areas, Hamzayev aims to facilitate the sustainable development of Uzbekistan, while also emphasizing the importance of effective governance, social sectors, and international relations.
