BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 24. The United States has become the largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for Türkiye, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a Turkish-American Business Council event in New York, TurkicWorld reports.
"America has become our largest LNG supplier, and we want to crown this relationship with a long-term contract. The signing of a memorandum of intent between our energy company Botaş and Exxon Mobil was an important step in this direction," the Turkish president said.
According to the president, Türkiye has attracted nearly $270 billion in foreign direct investment over the past 20 years, and 83,000 foreign-owned companies are now operating in the country.
He called on the US to remove several measures and restrictions in the trade sphere, including additional customs duties, and restrictions in the iron and steel and aluminium sectors.
Erdogan mentioned that Türkiye-US trade volume exceeded $30 billion in 2023, but there is still great growth potential.
There are 5 LNG terminals in Türkiye, to which LNG from the US, Qatar, Algeria, and other countries is delivered by gas carriers. Türkiye is also connected by a system of gas pipelines with Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Bulgaria.
Türkiye's gas demand is about 50 billion cubic meters per year.
