DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, September 23. Tajikistan and the United Nations University (UNU) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance academic and scientific collaboration, TurkicWorld reports via Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The partnership aims to address pressing global environmental challenges, focusing on water, environmental health, food security, agriculture, climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
The cooperation is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, capacity-building initiatives, and research efforts to support Tajikistan and the UN at national, regional, and global levels.
It will also strengthen science, technology, innovation, and sustainable development initiatives in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The agreement was signed by Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin and UN Deputy Secretary-General and UNU Rector Tshilidzi Marwala within the frame of Summit of the Future 2024 in New York on 22-23 September.
Tajikistan, a member state of the UN, has played a significant role in the development of ten UN General Assembly resolutions and the formation of global initiatives such as the International Year of Freshwater, the Water Cooperation Year, the decade for "Water for Life," the decade for "Water for Sustainable Development," and the International Year for Glacier Preservation. Additionally, Tajikistan served as co-organizer of the UN Water Conference in 2023.
